*SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES * The Professional Advisor is responsible for providing comprehensive academic advising services to students within a dynamic university environment.
This individual plays a crucial role in supporting student academic success, retention, and persistence by offering guidance on academic planning, course selection, and career readiness.
The advisor works closely with faculty, staff, and other university departments to ensure students receive the resources and support needed to achieve their educational goals.
They will assist students in a variety of areas that include assistance with questions about academic calendars, course rotations, course offerings, resources, and provide guidance to connect students with the individuals and offices on campus who can provide the help students need.
The Professional Advisor provides the expertise and builds relationships with students to identify interests and needs, advance the strategies, skills and self-efficacy that lead to individual and community growth and success.
The advisor is also responsible for monitoring student academic progress by utilizing university systems to identify and support students who are at risk.
To promote academic success, the advisor may help facilitates workshops and information sessions on crucial topics such as time management, study strategies, and major exploration, as well as work closely with students on academic probation.
Collaboration with faculty and other university departments is essential to connect students with a broad spectrum of academic resources, including tutoring services, internships, and research opportunities.
*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * · Provide personalized academic advising to assigned students, including the development of academic plans, course selection, and understanding of university policies and requirements.
· Maintain accurate and confidential advising records, documenting student interactions and progress.
· Actively work to implement recommendations related to improvement of success services to better serve those who have been excluded from systems, policies, and practices.
· Provide culturally appreciative advising case management services to advance the engagement and success of Hispanic, first generation, transfer, active military and veterans, and other traditionally under-served students.
· Work closely with the Financial Aid department to ensure that students are aware of and can access financial resources available to them, thereby supporting their academic and personal success.
· Engage in culture-conscious and sustaining practices to achieve successful outcomes for Hispanic students from admissions throughout the journey in higher education.
· Collaborate with the appropriate faculty and staff in support of student development of their career goals, career pathways, class requirements and opportunities.
· Work to ensure students have the opportunity to connect to culturally sustaining engagement opportunities.
· Work to build sustainable relationships with students to better understand and support educational success in the context of their unique lived experience.
· Partner with students to develop rapport, respect, and trust relationships via meetings, participation in events, communication, and the like.
· Partner with students to identify initial strengths and challenges in academic, career, and personal pathway by identifying factors impacting academic progress.
· Work with faculty advisors to examine alternatives based on changing goals, academic progress, or personal/systemic situation, and interpret analytics to guide and empower students to establish academic and career goals.
· Communicate with student caseload in a culturally sustaining manner frequently and intentionally through multiple methods, including but not limited to face-to-face meetings, college-supported technology solutions, email, telephone, text messages, and social media.
· Identify current and potential needs and opportunities for resource referrals and partnering with students in gaining early access to key college resources (e.
g.
library, writing center, tutoring, basic needs resources, student life opportunities, and more.
).
•Contribute to the development and implementation of advising policies, procedures, and initiatives aimed at enhancing student success, retention, persistence, and graduation.
· Support students in understanding their pathway and graduation plan through official evaluation of previous college, military, AP, and other alternative credit; through continuous, on-time enrollment for each term; and through timely application for graduation and preparation for next steps post-graduation.
*OTHER FUNCTIONS * · Serve as a means for students to learn about campus and community resources.
· Support and work with all areas of Academic Support, Student Services, and other areas of campus to provide a good student experience.
· Meet and greet visitors of the advising center.
· Supervise, train, set schedules, and verify timecards for work study students as needed.
· Other reasonable and work-related duties as assigned by the Dean of Academic Support.
· Ability to work evenings and weekends.
*EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED * · Bachelor’s Degree• · Two-years of experience working in an educational environment providing direct student services (such as academic advising, financial aid, TRIO, multicultural services, or Workforce education), or two-years experience in an agency or school setting managing a client caseload.
· Experience providing culturally responsive services and assistance to students/clients with intersecting identities and multicultural backgrounds.
· Excellent personal and public relations skills; must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff, and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds.
· Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
*ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS * · Accuracy and attention to detail.
· Ability to perform several tasks concurrently with ease and professionalism.
· Ability to use sound judgment, maturity and responsibility when dealing with a variety of persons in a public relations capacity and sensitivity to student needs.
· Exceptional organizational skills.
· Knowledge and proficiency in use of general office equipment and software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and access.
· Must have excellent problem-solving skills.
· Understanding of issues of diversity; demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in promoting respect and appreciation for diversity among students and staff.
Job Type: Full-time Pay: $45,000.
00 - $50,000.
