I rescued this 1950's/1960's Truetone from an old closet on it's way to the firepit.
Some serious dirt and grime were removed, the neck reset with new frets, with a new nut and saddle.
It's a beauty now with some vintage patina and the old rosewood fretboard re-radiused from 7.
5" to 12".
The tuners were cleaned and lubricated and the buttons replaced.
At the
12th fret, the action is 0.
090" on the low E and 0.
070" on the high E.
Intonation and harmonics are good.
11-52 coated strings.
Solid spruce top and unknown laminated body and sides.
It has the original pickguard and intact tortoise binding! Full disclosure; it still has some "old grandpa" aroma, but is mellowing out.
I suspect it would feel at home at a campfire sing-along.
Truetone's were made by the Kay company and sold in Western Auto catalogues.
It's a little difficult to determine an exact age, but the name-plate and ultra-cool-wraparound bridge provide some clues, most likely late 50's or early 60's.
Good luck finding old Western Auto catalogues but the chase is half the fun.
Some "before" pictures and reference listings are provided.
It's a player now worthy of attention.
You are going to love this old guitar.
