Position Summary, Primary Role and Purpose:
Work with school administration and faculty, students, parents, and community to plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program at the school assigned.
Counsel students to fully develop each student’s academic, emotional, and social abilities and address the needs of special populations students.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification
Master’s degree in Counseling, (Required)
Valid Texas SBEC School Counselor Certificate (Required)
Two years of Teacher Experience (Required)
1-2 yrs.
experience in School Counseling (Preferred)
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development.
Excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
Ability to innovate, think creatively and critically, and actively find solutions to new and familiar challenges.
A desire to provide school guidance counseling within the framework of Heritage Academy Charter Schools, Inc.
(HACS) mission.
Strong interpersonal skills in listening to, working with, communicating with, and knowing students, parents, faculty and staff.
Trustworthiness and integrity with all constituencies.
Excellent skills in managing details, deadlines, programs, people, and large quantities of information in a proactive, timely, organized, calming, and effective manner.
Creative, strategic, and thoughtful thinker regarding the assessment of and improvements to current programs and, as helpful, the development of new program elements that will enrich the quality of the school guidance counseling efforts
A deep working knowledge of public school guidance programs.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Primary Responsibilities:
Communicate the guidance program to students and parents.
Assist teachers to include guidance program with charter curriculum.
Administer education programs and career awareness to individuals and student groups on an ongoing basis.
Ensure individual and small group counseling needs are met.
Advises and counsels students regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional problems.
Remains universally accessible and makes an effort to know every student for whom they are responsible.
Provides individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families regarding academic, emotional, and physical matters.
Teaches guidance classes and provides guidance counseling to students through planned activities in small group or classroom settings to convey educational, social, and important school information, and offers workshops/seminars for parents.
Consults, facilitates and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents on specific student and parent academic and educational matters, including academic modifications and/or accommodations.
Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s academic, social, emotional, and educational needs and abilities.
Participates on the campus MTSS Committee /ARD Committees, regarding assessment/monitoring of students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinates with other educational/behavioral health specialists.
Assists students/parents in understanding school policies and procedures.
Provides counseling to address social and emotional concerns and appropriately refers students to behavioral health specialists.
Communicates, coordinates, and collaborates with behavioral health specialists on developing and implementing student supports.
Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events.
Presents and disseminates information about various post-secondary programs.
Remains informed regarding matters that have an impact on school counseling.
McKinney-Vento, Foster Care and Suicide campus liaison.
Participates in other responsibilities as assigned.
