Liver Transplant Hepatologist
The Transplant Center, Joe R.
and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio, in collaboration with University Health, seek a transplant hepatologist faculty for our busy liver transplant and live liver donor program.
The hepatologist will have a concentrated focus on the delivery of top-quality patient services and operational excellence.
The successful candidate will have an administrative home and report directly to the Malu and Carlos Alvarez Center for Transplantation, Hepatobiliary Surgery, and Innovation and will have an academic home within the Department of Medicine related to promotion and tenure.
Our innovative and experienced team has sharply increased access to high-quality liver care including transplantation and is known for being the first US program to perform a ‘paired living liver exchange,’ now a routine offering.
Our adult transplant rate is 89.
7 with a pre-transplant mortality rate of only 11.
5%, better than national rates and the best in our region.
We have had the top US one-year survival after a living donor liver transplant and are #1 in the state for Liver Transplant survival.
In 2023, we were named the number one liver transplant program in the US by Interlink Health.
Among many attractive features of this program are our excellent teams of APPs, nursing, and other allied health professionals caring for living donors, candidates for transplant, and recipients: our long-standing collaboration with Texas Liver Institute, a hepatology fellowship program, integration with our multidisciplinary Liver Tumor Center, a robust hospital medicine team, and an onsite Organ Donor Care Unit, the Center for Life – a collaboration between UTHSA, the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance (TOSA), University Hospital, and a coalition of recovery agencies to create a specialized facility dedicated to maximizing donation outcomes and enhancing research and education.

Qualifications:

with board certification(s) in Hepatology.
Eligible for unrestricted licensure for the state of Texas.
Advanced expertise in Liver transplantation and living liver donation.
Broad capabilities in the medical management of Liver disease.
A track record of clinical excellence, as proven by 3 consecutive years of outstanding STS Database personal outcomes, is required.
Effective collaborator and communicator with referring providers to expand the business and provide the best possible care for patients.
Strong orientation toward Patient-Focused Care, quality improvement, and team building.
Proven ability to actively participate in creating an environment that promotes initiative, innovation, and continual learning.
