SUMMARY:
The Reading Specialist is responsible for organizing, planning, and executing the Page Turners Reading Program.
The Reading Specialist will oversee the successful implementation of the program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Creates and takes ownership of a safe, orderly, and positive environment for the Page Turners Reading Program.
Guides and facilitates the components of the program: literacy activities, data collection, and formal assessment administration.
Utilizes the BGCA Power Hour Reading curriculum and creates supplemental evidence-based reading activities to provide the review, practice, and reinforcement needed to build reading and comprehension skills.
Addresses off-task behavior with effective behavior management techniques.
Serves as the Subject Matter Expert on the reading program and as a mentor to the part-time reading specialists.
Attends and participates in all scheduled meetings.
Responsible for compiling and maintaining accurate data and case files gathered through various sources.
Commits to the long-term goal of increasing each students reading and comprehension skills by the end of the academic year.
To perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
HS Diploma or GED required.
40+ college hours are required.
Major in Interdisciplinary Studies, English or Education preferred.
Previous elementary teaching experience preferred.
Must be able to work with inner-city youth.
Travel between sites is required, must have own transportation.
Must possess good character and decision-making skills.
Must possess a sincere interest in children, maturity, self-control, and sound judgment.
Must have a working knowledge of positive youth development, early literacy teaching strategies, and positive behavior management skills.
Must have the energy, initiative, and ability to get things done within specific time frames.
Must have excellent organization skills and a strong ability to communicate with positive feedback.
Must support the organization's mission, vision, and goals.
Must uphold the policies and procedures of the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio.
Possess skills for communicating clearly and knowledgeably.
Possess and demonstrate the ability to function objectively and fairly in all aspects, including discipline.
