Rare and Unusual 18th Century Flax Break, c.
1680
Some of the most rare, touching and evocative pieces of furniture which come into the showroom are the ordinary working vernacular pieces, provincially made of local timbers and of a primitive functional form.
And the most unusual of these are the tools, worked by hand, used long before electricity and mechanisation.
This beautiful early provincial tool is a flax break – used to chop and soften the fibres of flax which was grown all over the British Isles and could be woven into clothes, ropes, fishing nets and matting.
Flax is evidenced to have been used for these purposes by peoples of the British Isles 34,000 years ago and in the 17th and 18th centuries it was widely grown by tenant farmers and then processed using flax breaks or retting.
