Area Agency on Aging (AAA) - Benefits Counseling Specialist
(AACOG)
This is a responsible, non-supervisory position requiring familiarity with various government programs, such as Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Administration for Community Living (ACL), Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), Older Americans Act (OAA), Office Area Agency on Aging (OAAA) and insurance benefits related to the elderly, and various rules and regulations regarding aging programs and services.
Duties include assisting clients daily on a one-to-one basis either by phone or in-person; Providing resource information or referrals to elderly and individuals with disabilities, their family members, and/or caregivers; coordinating services with other agencies; Screening the incoming referrals and enrolling individuals into the AAA service programs for which they may be eligible in accordance with OAA/TAC/ACL/HHSC service definitions.
Legal Assistance in support of older Texans within AACOG’s area of responsibility.
Maintains current knowledge in various related government and local programs, which may include Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage Plans, Social Security, Social Security Disability, Medicare Cost Sharing, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Utility Assistance Program, Community Based Services, and Appeals processes for Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security; As needed, reports Medicare and Medicaid fraud; reports abuse, neglect and exploitation of the elderly and individuals with disabilities; provides assistance to senior citizens in the direct application for obtaining and maintaining entitlement benefits; regular contact with clients and their families, organizations of the elderly, service providers, other program personnel, state and federal liaisons and the general public; Must complete benefits counseling certification(s) within the first year of employment; perform other job related duties as assigned.
Required Degree/Job Experience: High School or its equivalent.
At least one (1) year of experience in the field of Aging, Social Work, Social Services, Public Administration, Human Services, or related field; Experience as a Paralegal and/or Paralegal training; Prefer bilingual fluency in both English and Spanish; Or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities.
This position is a Pay Grade 9 with a starting of $17.
87 hourly.
This is a non-exempt position.
